Aenaon Dance Theater The human being is forged in such a way as to always want to grasp a «concrete» logic. Why then it could not be possible to embrace, for once, the «logic» of a dream? The instinctive relation which exists between different human beings at the same time, in the same place, with a silent, common agreement, establishes naturally a creation-oriented universe. The strength, the truth, the reason of being for a performance is to approach the breath of its time at the closest in order to reveal its mystery. Dance, although the most archetypal of the arts, cannot deny the technique and will thus give birth to a new kind of spectacle, through the control of the evolving body. Every generation’s creation is crossed by specific structures, because the human being is defined as well in Space as in Time. Consequently, all variations are allowed and all forms wait only to be revealed… AENAON begins a new period of work. The artists of the company form a coherent group in their common aspiration to the work, while not questioning their personal ones, in spite of the various disciplines which become their means of technical expression. This human palette, this plurality of opinions and techniques, proposes constantly new choreographic options and does not make way for a linguistic routine of the dance vocabulary, nor to the automatism of writing. The elaboration is slower, more thoughtful, than previously and more personal vis-à-vis the needs of the interpreters, yet also closer to my desires which have livened up my first ardour. The choice of the programs assembled here constitutes a human choice inspired by my dancers and by the presence by my side of women who represent the majority of the company. TIME, AS WELL AS CRITICS, place Daniel Lommel in the Pantheon of the ten best world dancers of his generation. Born in Paris on 26 March 1943, Daniel Lommel attends the Dance School of the Liège Royal Opera with Joseph Lazzini and then becomes the pupil of Nora Kiss in Paris. In 1964, he works for the Hamburg Ballet, under the direction of Peter van Dijck. He dances the ballets of the repertoire with Jacqueline Rayet, Claire Motte, Maria Tallchief, Sonia Arova, Marilyn Burr in choreographies by George Balanchine, Roland Petit and Janine Charrat, guest-choreographers at the time. In 1967, he joins the Ballet of Twentieth Century of Maurice Béjart; he remains as a soloist for thirteen years and from 1973 onwards as the company’s artistic co-Director. During this period, he dances with the most famous artists, such as Jorge Donn, Paolo Bortoluzzi and Suzanne Farrell. From 1975 until 1983, he dances «Songs of a Wayfarer» with Rudolf Noureev in the most important theatres of the USA and of Europe. In August 1980, with the assistance of Greek artists and personalities, he creates AENAON Dance Theatre (Χοροθέατρο). In collaboration with Minos Volanakis, the first performance took place at the Quarry of Vyronas, which later became the Theatre Melina Mercouri. From 1982 until 1989, with the support of Melina Mercouri, then Minister of Culture, he incorporates the company into the National Theatre of Northern Greece (NTNG) in Thessalonika. Today, «AENAON Dance Theatre» relies on a rich repertoire counting more than 60 creations and of an impressive first-rate list of more than 700 performances. Always in search of young talents for his creations, Daniel Lommel suggests a glance in constant renewal of the classic ballet of today.
