Bio

Andreas Lyberatos born in Patras in 1963, received a degree in Architecture at National Technical University of Athens and degree in Painting at Athens School of Fine Arts. He also attended classes at the Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland and Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium and completed post graduate studies in Design – Space – Culture at N. T.U.A. His work has been presented in five solo exhibitions - Galerie S.& H. De Buck, Ghent 2000, Batagianni Gallery, Αthens 2006 and 2011, Cube Gallery, Patras 2013, City of Athens Art Center, 2022 – and numerous group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, between others, at the Museum of Modern Art in Ostend, European Cultural Centre of Delphi, Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens, Contemporary Art Museum of Crete, Galleria Bydgoszcz, Poland, Athens Biennale 2011, White House Biennial Marseille 2015 and Vienna 2016, Contemporary Greek Art Institute Athens, State Museum of Contemporary Art and 6th Thessaloniki Biennale (parallel programme) 2017, 5th Mykonos Biennale 2021. He is member of the artistic group Horror Vacui. Lives and works in Athens.

From within a geometric structure invoking the archetypal shape of house and hearth that resides in our collective memory, a tree emerges with its dense, twisted branches, to dwell inside it and break it apart. The tree exists inside the house as an imaginary pole, connecting Heaven and Earth, the upper and lower worlds, as an axis mundi, simultaneously referencing nature’s chthonian as well as its life-giving forces. These forces join us to our instincts and deeper levels of existence, but also transform these instincts like Orphic Mysteries, seeking both a way out towards the light and the communion with it.
