Yorgos Taxiarchopoulos
Bio
Yorgos Taxiarchopoulos, born in Athens (1972).
His first studies are on Economics (BA) at the New South Wales University, Sidney, Australia (1989-1991). He returned to Greece in the early ‘90s and graduated with excellence from ASFA's department on Painting (1998-2003) at the atelier of Anastasios Christakis. He also studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieures des Beaux Arts, Paris (2001-2002 and 2002-2003) as a scholar of the LVMH group, in the atelier of Christian Boltanski and as representative of ASFA at the Germination13, Young European artist’s biennial for contemporary art. In Paris he met and attended the ateliers of Richard Deacon and Jean Marc Bustamante as well. In 2009 he participates with his video art work STRiKE (2009) at the international festival Les Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid for new contemporary art and cinema. He also cooperated with Catherine Bay showing the particular artwork in the Center Pompidou, at the Rendezvous du Forum (2010).
Yorgos Taxiarchopoulos graduated his masters’ degree on digital arts (MDA – ASFA 2007) as a scholar of IKY (Greek National State Scholarship association) and participated at the international research program for artists in CCA Kitakyushu, Japan (2007-2008) as a scholar of the CCA Kitakyushu Scholarship Committee and the B&E Goulandris foundation.
In Japan he had studio visits and cooperated with Anri Sala, Thomas Demand, Melik Ohanian, Akiko Miyake, Nobuo Nakamura, Antone Vidokle, Alicia Framis, Eiji Kono, Maria Lind and he showed his art works in one solo show (CCA Studios 2008) and in two group shows (MAEDA studios 2007 & Playtime TOKYO 2007-2008). At the moment he stands as Art Logistics Manager in the Art-Athina International Contemporary Art Fair of Athens and he is realizing his PhD research about Art on Education at ASFA, department of Theory & History of Art (2009-2014) with supervisor Dr. Titika Salla. He also speaks English, French and Japanese. Yorgos Taxiarchopoulos has participated on exhibitions in Greece and abroad (France, Austria, Great Britain, China, Japan, USA, Germany, Spain, etc.) in prestigious exhibition venues and contemporary art museums over the world (Center Pompidou, Haus der Culturen der Welt, Dumbo Arts Center – USA, Spanish Cinemateque, Theater du Chatelet, ENSBA, CACT, etc).
He has made 6 solo shows (2005-2013) and holds numerous publications at the daily press, newspapers and magazines (Greek and from abroad) with references to his artworks and shows.
Taxiarchopoulos has been awarded the 8th LVMH international prize for young artists (2002) and the first prize of Y&Z Spyropoulos foundation at its annual competition for Greek artists. In 2007 he was nominated to represent Greece at the National Pavilions in the 52nd Venice Biennial (Greek Ministry of Culture) and in 2006 he was nominated for the 5th DESTE prize for Greek artists (1st selection).
